Carl was nominated for “making an exceptional personal contribution to the life of the Trust over 40 years”.

Carl began his career as a newly qualified staff nurse in the old Cardiac Surgery Unit, which included some time in ITU. From there he went to medicine before moving to day surgery theatres around 1994.

Carl continued in theatres, moving up to inpatient theatres as an anaesthetic and recovery nurse where he progressed his career and nurtured hundreds of students through their training. After becoming a charge nurse for the anaesthetic and recovery team, he left to become the Practice and Development lead for all of theatres

Glowing testimonies from his colleagues included “I personally had the very good luck to have Carl as my mentor many years ago and through his skills and teaching I hope I've continued to do the amazing work he has shown through his 40-year career.”

Carl was presented with his award by Deputy Chief Executive, Steve Christian.

Steve said: "It is a prestigious award, this one and reading Carl’s nomination, his dedication to the organisation, contribution to the NHS and years of service was unwavering. On behalf of the Board and Trust this is a huge testament, our thanks and appreciation to you."

Whilst Carl retired from theatres earlier year, he has now returned to work on a part time basis.

Ever modest, he reflected on his award, saying "I didn't know what it was at the time and even on the night I thought other people were nominated too so when it was announced it was very humbling and even more so to be surrounded by family, friends and colleagues. Thank you!"

More than 400 nominations were received for the Celebrating Success 2024 overall.
