A team who organised themed events including Alice in Wonderland and The Greatest Showman to boost patient morale, are celebrating after receiving the Improvement Award in this year’s Celebrating Success awards - our annual staff recognition event. The Improvement Award is for an individual or team that has demonstrated an innovative approach to delivering care or services to patients, visitors or colleagues
Ward 35 undertook a Fundamentals of Care work stream to improve the patient experience during their stay in hospital.
Executive Director of Finance, Saba Sadiq, presented the award and heard from the team about the work they’ve undertaken, notably with every member of the team participating regardless of their role.
Ward manager Natalie Parr explains “Events such as bingo, craft activities, quizzes, getting visits from Pets as Therapy – it all helps make the day go faster and we find it really helps patients with their rehabilitation. Getting the award was amazing, it just showed the team is recognised for what they do every day.”
Themed events are just one of the numerous activities which the team find so beneficial to life on Ward 35. This has led to reducing length of stay. The timetable of activities, chosen by patients, has an underlying purpose to increase patient socialisation, activity and well-being.
The team felt that their combined efforts had truly paid off when a 100-year-old patient, who had arrived withdrawn and was not speaking, began to smile, talk and engage with the ward activities.
The whole team participated in the improvement and in the words of one patient - "Ward 35 is a happy ward with happy patients and happy staff".
More than 400 nominations were received for the Celebrating Success 2024 overall.
The ceremony was watched online by thousands of colleagues, family and members of the public. Watch the ward team receiving their award.
