Jessica Ireland has a very special reason to celebrate, having recently been named the People’s Health Hero in Blackpool Teaching Hospital’s 2024 staff awards.
Jessica is part of the SHINE (Support and Help in Education) team established two years ago as a way of reducing demand for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) by providing early mental health intervention for young people.
With community-based practitioners in local schools and with 60% of the allocated time dedicated as one to one, this has proved to be a successful format.
Jessica, an Education Mental Health Practitioner, was nominated for the Celebrating Success award by the mother of a young person who she had helped by building rapport and establishing trust resulting in huge improvements in his wellbeing.
The nomination said: “[Jess’s] passion and dedication to supporting young people was very much evident and extremely refreshing to see and experience….it is very difficult to see your child struggling with their mental health. Services generally lack in the area and are not appropriate, but this new service is just amazing and innovative. It will be extremely popular I am sure and will help a lot of young people. It is so important for this early low-level intervention work too as it will hopefully prevent future significant MH problems.”
Jessica said “I’m really passionate about early intervention – it’s nice for the mental health services to be recognised as we do a lot of work with young people. Considering the SHINE team has only been going for two years I’m very proud of the work we do and hope it continues.”
Deputy Chief Executive Steve Christian recently presented Jessica with her award.
The Celebrating Success awards were held online earlier in the year, and you can watch Jessica being revealed as the winner here.
