The family of the late John Lewington-Ashfield are remembering him by way of a beautiful waterfall mural which can be seen in the Windmill Unit at Victoria Hospital.
After John, who was treated here for prostate cancer, passed away in 2019, his family raised money for the mural at his funeral and commissioned local artist Adam Salisbury to do the artwork.
His daughters Dianne, Joanne and Paula met with Adam as the finished mural was revealed. Both Dianne and Joanne work at the Trust as a physiotherapy TI and a receptionist.
Their Mum, Kathleen also came along to see the mural which is in the quiet room of the Windmill Unit.
Dianne said “Dad would have been over the moon to see the artwork, we wanted something that was peaceful and that’s exactly what Adam’s created”.
The Macmillan Centre information and support manager, Helen Bright said “We feel so privileged to have the mural in our quiet room in memory of John. Many people come to our quiet room in times of worry and stress. The art work is so beautiful and creates a lovely calming presence that will provide comfort and support for people affected by cancer for many years to come.
Thank you so much to Dianne and her family.”
Adam, whose work is also on walls in Haematology and in the Victoria Centre, said “I just enjoyed working on the scene, I do put my heart into everything I do. It’s intended to show a ray of light coming into people’s life”.
The wall will include a commemorative plaque and the following words chosen by the family:
“Never give up hope. In memory of John Lewington Ashfield – one in a million.”
