The Emergency Department of a busy hospital might not seem the obvious place to make friends, but for Ann, Charlotte and Graham, it’s perfect. Since recently joining BTH as volunteers they’ve found the flexibility and appreciation have made their volunteer shifts something they really look forward to doing.
As ED volunteers serving refreshments, they know how much it means to patients to be offered a drink or a sandwich in the waiting area, especially when people are feeling unwell or are worried.
Graham says “You get to meet people, it’s a good atmosphere and it’s good to feel you are supporting the ED staff who work so hard”.
Ann joined us after attending Picnic in the Park, an appreciation event held annually by the Trust in recognition of the work our volunteers do. There are also regular social nights and many of the volunteers have been with us for years.
Ann says “I enjoy having company and working with others, it’s really rewarding and you feel like you have a purpose. When I get up in the morning, I can’t wait to get here!”
Charlotte says “For me, with a young child, it has to be flexible but there’s no pressure and volunteering can fit around my other schedules. In ED, people are happy to be offered a drink, they really appreciate it and it’s good to make them smile!”
Volunteers Manager, Catherine Henshaw says “Volunteering is a great way to make friends and make a contribution to your local community whether you’re starting in work and want different experiences or you’re towards the end of a career or retired and want something to keep you active.”
