Midwifery graduates - Jul 2024.jpgCongratulations to the 2021 Midwifery class who have completed their Midwifery degree course after 3 years. All the students achieved their Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration and have secured jobs in our Maternity unit at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals.

As part of their course, the 15 new midwives met the standards for the pre-registration midwifery programme to be safe and competent midwives which included the following under direct supervision:

  • Facilitated 30-40 universal births
  • Undertaken 100 antenatal checks
  • Undertaken 100 postnatal checks
  • Undertaken 100 neonatal checks
  • Undertaken 40 cares in labour
  • And conduct 4,600 clinical placement hours.

Denise Leach, Maternity Practice Education Facilitator proudly commented, “I support all our student midwives during their clinical placements. I work collaboratively with each University, the supervisors, and assessors to ensure our learners develop the required skills to safely deliver the care and management required during pregnancy and childbirth. It is an absolute privilege to support our future workforce so closely and to see them qualify is always such a proud moment!”

At the celebration of their fantastic achievement the Practice Education team shared some of the feedback that they had received about the students. All the comments raised how caring, compassionate, and professional the students are and how great it was to watch them develop their skills and confidence to become newly qualified midwives.

We have pulled together a selection of the comments:

One student was described as a “very valuable member of the team. She is very caring with the women we care for. She will make a wonderful compassionate midwife”.

Another student showed that “she is a very keen learner, compassionate and professional. We will be very lucky to have her working with us. I can see that this is heartfelt throughout the Team who are also looking forward to working with her”.

The Trust supports students in completing their placements every year and we look forward to welcoming our next group.
