MSK team with award.jpgThe Trust’s Musculoskeletal (MSK) team has been honoured for ‘leading the way’ in which it works, helping people to move away from hospital settings and into the community as they recover.

The team was ‘highly commended’ in the category of Health and Wellbeing at the 2024 Active Communities Awards run by local organisation Active Blackpool. The awards are an annual opportunity to recognise, celebrate and reflect on the role that sport plays within the community.

MSK conditions affect the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, or nerves. Common symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders include pain, weakness, stiffness, joint noises, and decreased range of motion.

The nomination praised the team for leading the way with partnership working to help move away from hospital settings and into community settings such as the gym at Stanley Park. The MSK service has utilised studio space at Stanley Park to run grouped exercise classes for people with a range of musculoskeletal conditions and post-operative care. In addition to this, The MSK team played a key role in supporting Blackpool Council’s Spring into Spring event earlier this year.

Caroline Humphreys, one of the team leaders said “We were all very honoured by the recognition for our work within the community. It has been a project that has been developed for over a year.

“The MSK service offers a certain a number of exercise/condition specific classes and thanks to the partnership with the Active Blackpool team we have been able to, not only, increase the class size and equipment availability but are currently in the process of creating new classes open to a wider variety of patients.

“We run classes on a weekly basis, supporting, and interacting with patients and the facility as well as a small background team who are working on class development and audit.”

The MSK service will be at the Active into Autumn events taking place around Blackpool this week to provide information and suggestions on how you can improve your health and increase your activity.
