A Trust colleague has been shortlisted for a top award celebrating diversity in healthcare.
Robert Joseph Yusay, Cardiac Theatre Practitioner at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, runs the Trust’s Cultural Diversity network in addition to his day job, helping colleagues from overseas settle into the roles in the organisation.
He has been shortlisted for the national BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) Health and Care awards, established in 2019 to celebrate the unsung heroes of the NHS and black, Asian and minority ethnic health and care services.
Organising celebrations for occasions including Chinese New Year, Black History Month, Philippines, India and Pakistan Independence Days and NHS Overseas Workers Day, Robert is always coming up with new ideas to encourage colleagues to feel supported and get involved.
The Trust has employees from more than 50 different nations. Reflecting on how the network supports them, Robert said “The Cultural Diversity Network aims to promote cultural awareness and events for our international colleagues. Furthermore, we aim to promote anti-bullying campaigns and anti-racism campaigns as well.
“We act as a body to hear the needs of our overseas staff so that we can find a possible solution to their unwanted circumstances. We also conduct monthly sessions where we talk about culture, traditions, and give relevant information where it can benefit staff wellbeing. Moreover, we meet with new international colleagues and provide a welcome presentation about Blackpool, our Trust, and how to thrive here with us.”
The award winners have been invited to attend a ceremony in London this September.
