Blackpool Teaching Hospitals work supporting the victims of domestic abuse has won a second national award this week.

Operation Provide, a collaborative programme that supports victims across Blackpool, the Fylde coast and north Lancashire, won the HRH The Prince of Wales Award for Integrated Approaches to Care at Wednesday night’s Nursing Times Awards in London.

The same programme, which was started in response to the Covid pandemic, also won the Best Use of Integrated Care and Partnership Working Award with Lancashire Police at the HSJ Partnership Awards last month.

The Nursing Times Award judges said “the service demonstrated a system wide approach across organisational and professional boundaries that was having life changing impact on service users”.

Head of Safeguarding Hazel Gregory said: “Three years on from the pandemic, we have responded to and reached thousands of victims across Fylde coast and Lancaster and Morecambe as they call for help.

“We’ve made significant improvements in safeguarding, engagement and reducing harm, listening and responding to victims’ needs. Our model in collaboration with the Lancashire Police, the National Police Chiefs Council and HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services has now been recognised as a national best practice approach in reducing homicide.”

It was a big night out for teams from across the Trust who were also shortlisted in the Nursing Times Awards. They were:

  • Critical and Emergency Care Nursing award:  Two nominations – the ED Navigator Service, and a joint project between the Trinity Hospice Specialist Palliative Care Team at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals and the Trust (the project provides daily Specialist Palliative Care in-reach into the Trust’s Emergency Department, to support both patients and staff)
  • Children’s Services:  Emergency Department Navigator Service (which works to provide support for young people who attend hospital with violence-related injuries)
  • HRH The Prince of Wales Award for Integrated Approaches to Care: ED Navigator Service

Operation Provide was also shortlisted in the Team of the Year and Patient Safety Improvement categories.
