A team from Blackpool Teaching Hospitals is taking organ donation awareness to new heights to mark the 30th anniversary of the organ donor register.
In 2023/2024 19 people in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre received an organ transplant as a result of the generous gift of life from patient and their families who had consented to organ donation.
Now, for Organ Donation Week 2024, a 65-strong group of doctors, NHS colleagues, transplant recipients and relatives, are embarking on a synchronised climb of some of the UK’s highest peaks, including Scafell Pike and Snowdon on Friday, 27 September. The participants aim to reach the respective peaks at the same time, 2pm.
‘Turn the Peaks Pink’ is an NHS Blood and Transplant national initiative during a week of awareness raising. At Blackpool Teaching Hospitals this will include hospital buildings being lit up in pink, pink floral displays and a dedicated team on hand to encourage people to sign up and be an organ donor.
Consultant and Clinical Lead for Organ Donation, Dr Jason Cupitt said “This year, which is the 30th anniversary of the organ donor register, it is ever more important for the public to sign the register and let their wishes be known.
“There are still many patients waiting for an organ transplant and people saying “yes” to organ donation is the only way we will ever bridge that gap. Don’t assume your friends and family know your wish; make it clear by signing the organ donor register.”
Organ Donation week runs from 23rd to 29th September. There will be a promotional stand in the Blackpool Victoria Hospital main entrance during the week where colleagues and the public will have the opportunity to talk to experts about organ donation and join the donor register.
On Saturday, 28 September, the Trust will also be manning a stand in the Houndshill shopping centre in Blackpool in order to raise awareness and provide promotional material on organ donation. Members of the public will also be encouraged to sign the organ donor register.
