The Trust’s Anaesthetic team has been named ‘Training Department of the Year’ by the North West School of Anaesthesia.

The anaesthetic department at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals supports 11 theatres, as well as maternity theatres, with operations varying from day case procedures to larger surgeries requiring post operative critical care support.

The department was chosen to receive the award based on feedback that was given by trainee doctors in the GMC (General Medical Council) Training Survey.

There are roughly 30 trainee doctors across Cardiac, ICU and Anaesthetics at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals throughout year. During their time with the departments, they are supervised on cases by a consultant or other senior doctors where they are given informal and formal teaching alongside pastoral support.

Trainee doctors can range from Resident Doctors (previously known as Junior Doctors) who have started in their first role after medical school and are completing their Foundation Year 1 and 2 up to Specialty Trainee.

The awards ceremony took place earlier in the month.

Dr John Barrett, Anaesthetic College Tutor, said, “It was very nice to be nominated and it was great to receive such good feedback from our trainees. Our resident doctors help in theatres during the day and provide emergency cover for general theatres and obstetrics, along with intensive care unit support as needed”.

Dr Laura Blood, Cardiac Anaesthetic Tutor, said, “It is excellent to see colleagues from the department be recognised for the hard work that they do and the training they provide to our trainees. For many trainees this will be the first time they have seen heart and lung surgery and in the Intensive Care Unit, the first time looking after this group of patients. We are proud of what we do and enjoy welcoming resident doctors to our department and training our consultant colleagues of the future”.
