Looking after a Child with a Broken Ankle/ Lower Leg
A broken bone can be known as either a fracture, crack or break.
Treatment
The treatment for a broken ankle is by a Back Slab Plaster Cast (a temporary plaster of paris cast). Care of the Plaster Cast is dealt with on a separate card. You should give regular Paracetamol, as advised, to ease any pain. Exercise is very important. You should encourage your child to regularly wriggle his/her toes as soon as he/she is able to do so. Movement of the knee should also be encouraged.
Follow-up
Your child will be seen in the next Fracture Clinic. When reviewed at the clinic the type
of Plaster Cast may be changed if required.
