Looking after a child with a fractured humerus

A broken bone can be known as either a fracture, crack or break.

Your child has broken the upper bone in the arm – the HUMERUS.

Treatment

These breaks heal very well. Usually a ‘collar and cuff’ bandage is applied, although occasionally a special type of Plaster Cast is needed.

Care of the Plaster Cast is dealt with on a separate card.

The ‘collar and cuff’ should be worn under the clothes at all times.

The skin in the elbow crease can get very sore so be sure to keep this dry.

You should give regular Paracetamol, as advised, to ease any pain.

Exercise is very important.

You should encourage your child to bend and straighten his/her fingers regularly as soon as he/she is able to do so.

Movement of the shoulder and elbow should also be encouraged.
