Looking after a child with broken fingers or toes.
A broken bone can be known as either a fracture, crack or break. All of these terms
mean the same.
Treatment
The treatment for a broken finger or toe is quite straight forward.
The broken finger/toe is strapped to the finger/toe next to it and in this way the
uninjured one acts as a splint.
This strapping should be kept on at all times until you are advised further during your
fracture clinic appointment.
If the strapping becomes wet or falls off, the two fingers or toes will need to be
restrapped.
There is no need to return to the Accident and Emergency Department for this – you
may restrap it using elastoplast or similar tape.
You should give Paracetamol as advised toease any pain.
It is important to encourage your child to exercise the affected fingers/toes by gently bending and straightening them as soon as he/she is able to do so.
Follow-up
Your child will be seen in the next Fracture Clinic or Accident and Emergency Clinic.
