Looking after a child with a broken collar bone

A broken bone can be known as either a fracture, crack or break. All of these terms mean the same.

Your child has fractured his/her CLAVICLE (COLLAR BONE).

Treatment

The treatment for a fractured Clavicle is by a ‘Broad Arm Sling’.

The sling must be worn under the clothes at all times.

You should give regular Paracetamol ` as advised by a nurse or doctor to ease any pain.

The skin in the elbow crease and armpit (axilla) can get very sore so be sure to keep this area dry.

To wash under your child’s arm, get him/her to lean forward and the arm will naturally move away from the body allowing you access.

Exercise is very important. You should encourage your child to regularly wriggle their fingers as soon as he/she is able to do so.

Follow-up

Your child will be seen in the next Fracture Clinic or Accident and Emergency Clinic.

The Trust recognises the importance of multi-agency working: to safeguard children and young people.
