Looking after a child with a broken wrist/forearm
A broken bone can be known as either a fracture, crack or break. All of these terms
mean the same.

Treatment
This break is treated with either a removable wrist splint or a back slab plaster cast (a
temporary plaster of Paris cast).
Care of the plaster cast is dealt with on a separate card.
You should give regular Paracetamol as advised by your health care practitioner to
ease any pain.
Exercise is very important. You should encourage your child to bend and straighten
their fingers regularly as soon as he/she is able to do so.
Movement of the shoulder and elbow should also be encouraged.

Follow-up
Your child will be seen in the next Fracture Clinic.
The type of plaster cast may then be changed if required.
The Trust recognises the importance of multi-agency working: to safeguard children
and young people.
