It is an investigation to demonstrate the ability of your rectum (lower bowel) to empty. This area is not clearly seen on plain x-rays, so barium is used to highlight the area. The examination will be carried out by a specialist radiographer who is trained to perform this examination and make a diagnosis. An additional radiographer or nurse will also be present to support and assist during the examination. We are a training hospital and a student may be present during your examination, please inform a member of staff if this is unacceptable.
Once you have booked in at reception you will be taken to change into a hospital gown. Once in the x-ray room the procedure will be explained and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions. Please inform the radiographer if there is a possibility of pregnancy. Whilst you are lay on your side a small tube will be inserted into your back passage and your rectum will be filled with barium paste, the tube is then removed.
You will then be asked to sit on a bed pan and defaecate whilst x-rays are being taken. This allows the mechanism of bowel emptying to be evaluated. Though you may feel a little embarrassed, please be assured we aim to maintain your dignity at all times. The examination takes approximately 30 minutes.
Proctograms are generally regarded as a very safe test and problems rarely occur. Potential complications are uncommon and include: Pain, discomfort or a feeling of fullness when the paste is introduced.
Occasionally, if pain is part of your symptoms, this pain may be replicated by this procedure.
Damage to the bowel wall (such as a small tear in the lining of the bowel) occurs rarely, in fewer than 1 in 2000 tests. This damage is usually minor and may not produce any symptoms.
Defecating Proctogram takes place using fluoroscopy which involves the use of x-rays; however with modern equipment the risk is low. Your doctor has recommended this examination because he/she feels that the benefits are greater than the risk of not having the examination.
Alternative imaging may be available, but your doctor feels that this is the most appropriate test for you. Please speak to your referring doctor, or to the radiologist on the day of your examination.
Once complete you will be taken into a changing room with a toilet where you will be able to dress, then go home. Your motions may be paler than normal for a few days. You may also become slightly constipated, please drink plenty of fluids to prevent this.
Your results will be sent to the consultant that referred you for this test. You should expect to hear from the consultant within 3 weeks.
