You have been involved in an incident in which a Health Care
Professional (HCP) has accidentally been exposed to your blood
and/or body fluids.
It is usual practice for the HCP to be referred for blood tests
following accidental exposure to blood to exclude viruses such as
HBV, (Hepatitis B), HCV (Hepatitis C) or HIV.
Guidance from the Government’s Department of Health
recommends if an incident occurs the patient involved will provide a
routine blood sample which will be tested HBV, (Hepatitis B), HCV
(Hepatitis C) or HIV.
The tests are routine and good practice and does not indicate we
think you have any of the viruses.
The clinical staff will explain the process will be able to answer any
questions you may have.
You will be informed of your test results by an HCP within one week
of the sample being collected. This may be by phone as you it is
possible you will have been discharged from hospital.
Your results will be shared confidentiality to the Occupational Health
Department involved in the care of the HCP involved in the incident.
Having a blood test for HBV, (Hepatitis B), HCV (Hepatitis C) or
HIV will have no effect on your ability to obtain life insurance or a
mortgage.
If any of the results are positive, you will be referred to the
appropriate specialist service for on-going support and advice.
Thank you for your co-operation.
