We serve a population of around 350,000 and see over 28,000 patients per year in our dermatology service. The majority of our services are based at Clifton Hospital, with a smaller service located at Fleetwood Hospital (where we provide outpatient consultations in addition to dressings, skin surgery and light therapy services).
We are proud of our department, and have excellent feedback on the service we provide, and we are always happy to hear about your own experience of our service.
What does our dermatology department do?
At Clifton Hospital:
- See, diagnose and treat skin, hair and nail disorders in all age ranges
- Advise which topical treatments and bandages to use, and the correct way to use them, in order for you to treat your skin condition
- Provide a phototherapy service for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis and eczema. Patients attend our dermatology unit for either UVB or UVA treatment once it has been prescribed by the dermatologist. Appointments are available from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday
- Diagnose and carry out treatment on non-melanoma and melanoma skin tumours. These treatments include surgery, photodynamic therapy and topical treatments as well as cryotherapy. We also run a weekly skin cancer multi-disciplinary team meeting at Clifton Hospital
- See and treat severe acne in our nurse specialist clinics
- Monitor the use of systemic treatments for inflammatory skin disease in nurse-led clinics
- Assess, prescribe and monitor patients on biologic drugs for psoriasis and eczema
- Provide specialist topical treatment on our Day Case Unit for inflammatory skin conditions
- See and treat venous leg ulceration. The department has nurse-led leg ulcer clinics which run three times per week. Following initial assessment and treatment, a plan will be prescribed and continuation of care thereafter provided by the district nurses, who will treat your leg in a clinic setting or in your own home.
- Perform allergy tests for contact dermatitis. The patch testing clinic is run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week
- See and treat conditions of the apocrine glands which cause excess sweating (hyperhidrosis): we provide iontophoresis (idrionics) treatment. This treatment is supervised by trained nurses in our department
- Provide a cosmetic camouflage clinic for concealing skin conditions such as vitiligo and rosacea
- A teledermatology service for managing skin lesions
