This reference document is for the work-up of common presentations and abnormalities of the blood count and related tests. It provides guidance on when to refer to Haematology for specialist diagnosis. Full blood count abnormalities are very common, and a routine investigation in many primary and secondary care presentations.

Blood count abnormalities are NOT due to a primary haematological condition in the vast majority of cases. Referrals are accepted where there is reasonable evidence for a possible primary haematological condition, based upon prior investigation and exclusion of non-haematological causes by the referrer. Due to the vast number of blood counts done every day, it is not possible to advise on, or interpret every abnormal finding.

This document provides comprehensive guidance for next steps.
