Perinatal Mental health problems can occur during pregnancy or in the first year following the birth of a child – some services available will include families of children up to 2 years.
Maternal /paternal mental health problems are common, 1 in 5 new mothers experience them and up to 1 in 10 new dads.
These range from low mood, depression, and anxiety to more severe conditions such as post - traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsion disorder (OCD) and Psychosis. Some parents will have suffered mental health problems in their lives before pregnancy and birth, but for other parents’ symptoms may be new and can be frightening.
The transition to parenthood is a time of significant change, which can often be overwhelming and stressful, it’s not surprising that many parents feel like they are on an emotional roller-coaster during this time. It’s important to look after yourself, and remember, it doesn’t mean you are ‘losing it’ or that you are a bad parent.
Good mental health of parents is important to your baby; therefore, it is important to the health team caring for you. You can always discuss your worries with your Midwife/Health Visitor or GP.
