Babies and children can become very ill in hot weather.
Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sun. Older babies should be kept out of the sun as much as possible, especially during the hottest part of the day 11am-3pm. Apply sun protection lotion of at least SPF 30 regularly to all areas of the skin. Babies’ pram should have shade from a clip-on parasol or sunshade.
If your baby is sleeping in their pram in hot weather, ensure it is placed in shade and that no part of your child’s body is exposed to the sun, as this could cause sunburn. You need to check regularly that they are not getting too hot by feeling their tummy or back of neck. Do not cover babies’ pram with any blankets or cloth to give shade as this will prevent air circulating leading to overheating and possible heatstroke or heat exhaustion.
In hot weather keep where your baby sleeps at between 16-20 degrees and put them to sleep in lighter bedding and clothing if needed. The cot should not be placed in direct sunlight. A fan can be used to cool the room but don’t aim it directly at the baby.
