Each clinical area of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals should have an identified learning disabilities champion.
Their role is to improve health outcomes and experiences of patients who identify as having a learning disability and or autism.
Training
- Learning Disability Champions will have completed a 90-minute training session (Learning Disability Diamond Standards) to raise their understanding of the needs of people with a learning disability
- Will attend a minimum of six Learning Disability Champions meetings meeting per year with opportunities to increase understanding of supporting a patient with a learning disability and share experiences/ challenges/ good practice.
- Will receive ongoing support from the dementia and Learning Disability Lead Nurse and their line managers
- Receive any additional training identified for the role
Responsibilities
- To raise awareness of needs of patients who identify as having a learning disability in their area, specifically promoting individualised care and reasonable adjustments for all patients who identify as having a learning disability
- To be contactable in order to signpost staff of all disciplines to appropriate resources/ guidelines
- To ensure family member/carers are involved in the care, when appropriate
- To be prepared to take the lead on learning disability issues and identify potential issues in their area
- To ensure that the learning disability intranet resource folder/ guidance is accessed if needed and kept updated
- Ensure patients within clinical areas have a learning disability alert and are supplied with a learning disability passport
- To have an awareness of the provision of advocacy arrangements
- To support Learning Disability Awareness Week
- Attend any additional training that may be required for the role
