Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is form of therapy that was originally designed to alleviate distress associated with traumatic memories. During treatment using EMDR Therapy, therapy you will be asked to attend to emotionally disturbing material relating to your past experiences in sequence whilst engaging in forms of bilateral stimulation (BLS) such as side to side eye movements or hand tapping. This has been found to help the brain reach an adaptive resolution of the experience and reduce the distress associated with the memory. Developed in 1987, EMDR has developed a strong evidence base in its effectiveness in treating symptoms Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
